When fresh snow blanketed the mountain village during the holiday season, it created an unprecedented opportunity to document a winter scene that few people ever associate with southern Spain. Eager to capture this unique event, I gathered my photography gear and set out into the freezing night to photograph the quiet magic of a Spanish village covered in snow.
Evening Glow and Deserted Streets
The true beauty of a snowy holiday evening reveals itself after sunset. As darkness fell over El Sabinar, festive Christmas lights flickered to life, casting vibrant reflections across the fresh white drifts covering the quiet streets. At that late hour, the town was completely still. Residents had retreated indoors to gather around traditional wood-burning potbelly stoves, which provided the primary source of warmth in these mountain homes during winter. The contrast between the cold, silent streets glowing with holiday lights and the unseen warmth within the homes created a truly captivating atmosphere.
The Technical Challenges of Cold-Weather Photography
Documenting low-light winter scenes in freezing conditions presents significant physical and technical challenges. Operating fine camera controls while wearing thick gloves and heavy winter clothing is notoriously difficult, while waiting out long exposures demands patience in the biting cold. To protect the equipment from falling precipitation, I wrapped the camera in a specialized rain and snow cover. During extended night exposures, even a single stray snowflake landing on the front lens element can melt and create blurry, distorted spots across the final image.
Preserving a Rare Holiday Memory
Returning home thoroughly chilled to the bone, the immediate priority was carefully drying off the camera body and lenses to prevent moisture damage. Reviewing the captured files the following day made enduring the freezing temperatures completely worth the effort. Although a few frames were indeed marred by soft spots from drifting flakes hitting the glass, the vast majority of the photographs turned out exceptionally well. These images remain a treasured visual record of a magical, snowy Christmas in El Sabinar, capturing a serene side of Murcia that few ever get to witness.
