Media attention During the Visser-Severein Search

In May 2013, the sudden disappearance of former Dutch national volleyball star Ingrid Visser and her partner Lodewijk Severein sent shockwaves across Spain and the Netherlands. After checking into a hotel in Murcia on May 13, the couple failed to return, setting off an urgent, multi-agency investigation. In the frantic early days following their disappearance, family members and dedicated volunteers mobilized an organized search across the region. Serving as a press photographer with established connections across local, national, and Dutch media outlets enabled me to take on the responsibility of managing press relations, coordinating media moments, and ensuring accurate coverage during a critical period.

Steering Media Relations During a High-Profile Investigation

As public and media interest intensified internationally, maintaining clear communication between law enforcement, journalists, and the public became paramount. A pivotal briefing took place at La Delegación del Gobierno in Murcia, led by Joaquín Bascuñana, who served as the delegate of the national government in the region. Overseeing the National Police forces directing the investigation, Bascuñana held a joint press conference attended by dozens of Spanish and Dutch reporters. During this briefing, government officials provided detailed updates on the search trajectory, including critical findings regarding the couple’s abandoned rental car and ongoing forensic leads.

Capturing a Crucial Moment in the Investigation

A historical photograph from that day captures Joaquín Bascuñana standing at the center of a dense crowd of journalists, camera operators, and microphones as he addressed the gathering media. The intense press briefing highlighted the immense coordination required when managing international news attention during an active missing persons search. Tragically, the search ended shortly after when law enforcement discovered the couple’s remains near the rural district of Alquerías, confirming they had been murdered.

Managing media logistics throughout this painful ordeal underscored the vital role of press coordination during high-stakes crises. By bridging communication between government officials, international media networks, and search teams, volunteers helped ensure the search received the serious attention it deserved while supporting a family navigating an unimaginable ordeal.
