A Day on the Road with National Leadership
For years, working as an official photographer for the regional Socialist Party (PSOE) meant living life on the road. The job demanded long hours within official motorcades, documenting moments from early morning until late at night. Assignments ranged from high-energy political gatherings in packed auditoriums to quiet, high-stakes strategy meetings with local and national figures. On May 11, 2011, an ordinary assignment covering official engagements across the Region of Murcia suddenly transformed into a front-row view of a national crisis. The day began early at San Javier Airport, traveling across the region alongside Spanish Minister Cristina Garmendia. After completing a full schedule of official visits ending in Yecla around six in the evening, the entourage began its return journey toward Murcia city.
The Devastating Impact of the Lorca Earthquake
While en route, urgent news broke that a powerful earthquake had struck the historic city of Lorca at 18:47 local time. Measuring a magnitude of 5.1 Mw with a Mercalli intensity of VII, the shallow seismic event devastated the area, leaving nine people dead, hundreds injured, and thousands of residents temporarily displaced. Responding immediately to the unfolding emergency, the official convoy rerouted toward the disaster zone, arriving in Lorca around nine o’clock that evening. The scene was one of widespread disruption, as historic architecture, residential buildings, and public spaces bore the severe physical scars of the strike.
Documenting Presidential Solidarity and Community Grief
Two days later, on May 13, 2011, Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero arrived in Murcia to pay respects at the state funeral held for the victims. Before joining grieving families, local officials, and community members for the service, the Prime Minister was guided through the most severely damaged neighborhoods of Lorca to survey the structural destruction firsthand.
Following closely with a camera to document the visit, photographing the Prime Minister walking through the debris provided a sobering perspective on leadership during moments of tragedy.
