Each year between late January and early spring, the countryside across the Region of Murcia transforms into a breathtaking landscape of delicate pink and white petals.

The annual blooming of the almond trees marks a beloved seasonal milestone throughout southeastern Spain. Because microclimates vary significantly across the region, the bloom unfolds in a sweeping wave. It begins in the warmer coastal lowlands (Spanish) during late January and gradually moves into the cooler mountain valleys, where trees remain in flower through March and occasionally into April. During these months, thousands of visitors head outdoors on weekends to marvel at the orchards, driving high demand for regional magazine features, newspaper articles, and digital travel guides that highlight the best viewing locations.

Commissioned by a local publication to photograph the flowering orchards, I noticed a recurring pattern in typical media coverage. Travel articles and magazines consistently focus almost exclusively on the vibrant petals, publishing picturesque images of trees in peak bloom while ignoring the rest of the agricultural cycle. While the spring blossoms are undeniably striking, they represent merely the opening chapter of a much longer, fascinating story. Wanting to offer a more authentic documentary narrative, I set out to photograph the entire journey of the almond, tracing its evolution from the initial spring bloom all the way to the mature harvest. Visualizing every stage provides a richer appreciation for the landscape, honoring both the natural environment and the agricultural tradition that sustains the region year-round.

One compelling image from this comprehensive visual story is a close-up photograph depicting fresh almonds still resting inside their velvety outer hulls. Utilizing specialized macro photography techniques made it possible to fill the frame with intricate details, highlighting the soft texture of the protective green husk and the split revealing the shell beneath.
