Ronda Sur serves as the bustling southern gateway into the city of Murcia, an urban corridor defined by modern architectural growth. Dominating this entry landscape is Torre Proconsa, a prominent twelve-story commercial office complex. Between 2006 and 2009, an extensive visual archive documented the step-by-step development of this impressive tower for the construction firm Proconsa S.A.
Additional photographic sessions continued after completion to support the marketing and sales of commercial suites. Over nearly five years, capturing the tower’s evolution also provided a unique perspective on the surrounding region as the structural frame rose above the city.
Architectural Rivalries and Skyline Limits
At the time of its construction, local municipal guidelines established that no modern development in Murcia could exceed the elevation of the Cathedral of Murcia’s historic spire. Designed at twelve stories, Torre Proconsa maximized its allowable vertical footprint within these regulations, becoming one of the tallest commercial landmarks in the area.
When city height restrictions were eventually lifted, a competing building project added two massive decorative metal spires purely for marketing purposes to claim the title of the tallest building in Murcia. Despite such aesthetic rivalries, Torre Proconsa retained its status as a genuinely functional landmark commanding the southern approaches to the metropolis.
Capturing Moments from Above
Documenting an ongoing construction site over several years creates rare opportunities to capture urban transitions from unusual angles. Before interior walls and glass facades were installed, raw concrete floors high up on the twelfth floor offered clear, sweeping views across the horizon.
During quiet moments on site, dramatic Mediterranean sunsets transformed the surrounding landscape into golden vistas, framing the city below.
