A Rare Snowfall in El Campo de San Juan

As a commercial landscape photographer, capturing unique weather conditions is essential for creating compelling images that local governments and tourism boards frequently use to promote the region.

The Elusive Magic of Snow in Arid Murcia

Much of my work takes place in Murcia, a hidden gem in the far south of Spain known for having one of the driest and warmest climates in mainland Europe. Rainfall is a rarity here, but snow is rarer still. Aside from a brief, surprising dusting around Murcia city in 2017, more than four decades had passed since the region last saw significant snow. When the elements finally align, a photographer must act immediately. Capitalizing on these fleeting moments demands deep terrain knowledge, constant weather tracking, and a stroke of good luck with one’s schedule.

A Race Against the Radiant Spanish Sun

This particular photo shoot unfolded on a quiet Sunday morning. As dawn broke, a fresh blanket of white was clearly visible across the region’s higher elevations. However, there was no time to spare. Under the intense Spanish sun, fresh powder in southern Spain often vanishes by noon. Packing camera gear in haste, the destination was set for the peak of La Fuensanta. When locals mention La Fuensanta, they almost always think of the famous sanctuary near the city of Murcia. However, deep within the mountainous municipality of Moratalla lies a majestic summit bearing the exact same name, offering breathtaking views across the inland valleys.

A Dynamic Winter Landscape Over El Campo de San Juan

Navigating the steep ascent up Moratalla’s summit proved to be the ultimate payoff. The peak rewarded the climb with a fairytale panorama over El Campo de San Juan, completely blanketed in brilliant white. Beyond the fresh snow, the sky provided ideal photographic conditions as a broken cloud layer swept across the valley, creating a constantly shifting interplay of light and shadow. These moving dark patches cast against the glowing snow fields added remarkable depth and texture to every frame. It turned out to be an exceptionally rewarding morning where precise timing, local expertise, and fortunate weather converged to showcase the unexpected winter beauty of inland Spain.
