Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón during an Open Assembly in Murcia - 2014

Capturing a Future Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez

Event photography often hides unexpected historical treasures. A skilled photographer must always be in the right place at the right moment. For many years, I captured images for the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE). This intense professional journey provided me with an invaluable visual archive.

One of my most special memories is photographing Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón. At that time, he was not the famous national leader we know today. He was still far from reaching the presidency of the Spanish government. He was simply a young politician working hard to win public trust.

The Profile of a Resilient Political Leader

To understand the value of these photos, we must remember who Pedro Sánchez is. Born in Madrid in 1972, he graduated with a degree in Economics and Business Administration. His rise to power remains one of the most discussed stories in recent history. He first became the general secretary of the PSOE in 2014. That era marked a time of deep renewal for the Spanish left.

Later, he faced intense internal party battles and even resigned from his post. However, he returned stronger than ever thanks to the passionate support of grassroots members. In 2018, he made history by winning the first successful no-confidence motion in Spanish democracy. Since then, he has governed the nation, proving his immense capacity for political survival. My images capture the raw beginnings of this complex public journey.

The Open Assemblies Campaign in San Basilio (Murcia)

These photographs were taken during a political gathering in Murcia (2014). The event took place at the old Lonja de Contrataciones. Today, local neighbors know this vibrant community space as the Pérgola de San Basilio. It was part of the intense preparation for the upcoming elections in May 2015.

Sánchez traveled across the Spanish geography to support local and regional candidates. This specific stop in Murcia belonged to a citizens’ conference titled “Open Assembly”. These open meetings aimed to foster direct communication with regular citizens. The format was completely democratic, allowing anyone to participate and share their reflections freely.

Audience members could step up and voice their opinions in quick, sixty-second interventions. Sánchez then answered each question directly, proving that every opinion mattered. For those who could not attend, the party streamed the entire event live on their official website. Thousands more followed the political debate on social media using the trending hashtag #AsambleasAbiertas.

Mastering the Rembrandt Style in Total Low Light

The political rally took place very late in the evening. Night had already fallen completely over the city of Murcia. The lighting conditions inside the venue were quite poor. For an event photographer, these situations represent a major technical challenge.

A dark environment forces you to push your equipment to its absolute limits. It requires a complete mastery of shutter speed and camera sensor sensitivity. Despite the difficulties, I love working in these complex settings.

The heavy shadows allowed me to chase a highly artistic perspective. I decided to capture the politicians using a dramatic Rembrandt lighting style. The scarce light rays beautifully isolated the figures against the dark background. The final images offer an intimate, theatrical, and deeply atmospheric look at history in the making.
