While the principal towns across the region’s forty-five municipalities were well-documented, hundreds of outlying rural communities lacked comprehensive visual records. Covering territory from coastal San Pedro del Pinatar down to Águilas, as well as the farming countryside surrounding Torre-Pacheco in the Campo de Cartagena plain near the Mar Menor, the documentary project offered a deep exploration of authentic local life far beyond standard travel itineraries.
An Encounter with a Stoic Rural Companion
While exploring the quiet agricultural landscape around Torre-Pacheco, an unexpected subject paused the journey: a lone donkey standing motionless, gazing forward with calm, stoic grace. In decades past, seeing working animals scattered across fields was an everyday occurrence throughout southeastern Spain. Today, however, encountering one in the open country feels like stepping back through history.
