The Story Behind the Sunset at Ronda Sur
Ronda Sur serves as the main southern entryway into the historic city of Murcia, Spain. Dominating this bustling access road stands Torreproconsa, an iconic twelve-story office building that commands immediate attention.
The Gateway to Murcia and a Signature Assignment
Between 2006 and 2009, I was commissioned by the development firm Proconsa S.A. to document the entire construction process of this modern landmark. Although the company has unfortunately since closed its doors, the project remains a cornerstone of my architectural portfolio. Even after the structural work was finished, I continued photographing the completed commercial interiors to support marketing efforts for the new office spaces.
Golden Hour Moments from the Bare Concrete Framework
Documenting a major construction site over nearly five years provided endless opportunities to view the surrounding city from rare vantage points. One particularly memorable image was taken from the twelfth floor when the building was still a bare concrete shell with open sides. Spotting an extraordinary sunset developing over the horizon, I zoomed across the landscape to capture the warm light filtering over the city below. Assignments like these often blur the line between technical architectural documentation and fine art photography, capturing fleeting atmospheric moments high above the daily urban rush.
Height Restrictions, City Rules, and Skyline Rivalries
Reaching twelve stories high, Torreproconsa was recognized upon completion as one of the tallest structures in Murcia. For a long time, local urban planning rules strictly prohibited any new building from rising higher than the bell tower of the historic Cathedral of Murcia, effectively capping the city’s vertical growth. When municipal authorities eventually lifted this height restriction, local developers rushed to compete for the skyline. In one famous instance of marketing rivalry, a developer added two large ornamental metal spires to a neighboring tower under construction simply to claim the title of Murcia’s tallest building, despite the spires having no practical function whatsoever.
Preserving Murcia’s Urban Legacy Through Photography
Today, Torreproconsa remains an impressive architectural gateway welcoming visitors into Murcia along Ronda Sur. While the original construction company is no longer active, the visual record of its creation preserves an important chapter in the city’s modern development. Beyond documenting steel and concrete, architectural photography captures the subtle history, changing regulations, and unique local stories that define an evolving urban landscape.
